despite a very great attempt by Canonical and some big companies such as the Bloomberg, the Ubuntu Edge has failed to reach it's 32 million USD goal, ending up with just a mere $12,809,906 pledged instead. While the goal was pretty far from being reached, there's a lot more proven about this effort than just not reaching the goal.

Publicity
Even though the funding goal wasn't reached, the Ubuntu Edge got a lot of press coverage. This is probably one of the few times that Ubuntu has ever gotten so much attention from the general press. So even though the funding goal wasn't met, millions of people have now been exposed to Ubuntu and what its goals are. I'm sure gaining more users would be a good thing for Canonical.

Experience
Going forward, Canonical has learned a lot from its first (unsuccessful) crowd funding campaign. I'm sure they had their share of learning how to price things correctly, as well has learning to get things right the first time, to maximize contributes.

One of the biggest points that can be the reason why their efforts failed was because at first there were multiple tiers of Ubuntu Edge's, all at varying prices. All included the same package, so why pay 10, 20, or even more dollars for the same thing? Canonical fixed this by having a fixed price Ubuntu Edge later on for all, but the damage was already done. In the future, I'm sure they have learned from that and won't be making a mistake like that again.

It may be hard to find your files in Explorer on Windows 8. Due to the hidden functions, you are limited in your file searches and basically do not have full control of your own computer system.
The limitations can be very frustrating. Wouldn’t it be great to have access to all settings in just one folder – like having divine overall access to your computer, to have the ability to do anything, with every single option available within reach?
In Windows, this is aptly termed ‘GodMode’. It is a hidden control option, which gives you access to all the options on your computer. In this tutorial, you will learn how to activate it.

To activate God Mode in Windows 8, follow the steps below:

1. Go to the Desktop

2. Right-click and select New Folder.

3. Right-click on the New Folder and select Rename.

4. Change the name of the folder [just copy & paste the following string]:
GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

5. Open the folder and you will find every utility Windows 8 has under the sun.
Note: With God Mode, you can easily access all the Administrative options and make any desired adjustments.
Enjoy!

Sony updated its smart watch Tuesday, introducing the Sony Smart Watch 2 at Shanghai's Mobile Asia Expo.
Designed to be used as a second screen for your Android smartphone, the water-resistant smart watch has NFC (near-field communication) connectivity, and can be personalized with apps based on how you want to use it.
“Competitors are only now launching first-generation devices, while we are already launching a third-generation device with all the insight gained from over half a million customers combined with Sony’s wealth of technology expertise to create the best ever smart-watch experience,” Stefan K Persson, head of companion products at Sony Mobile Communications, said in a press release announcing the watch.
“We have over 200 unique apps dedicated for Sony SmartWatch, with over one million downloads to date, and we are continuing to work with our strong developer network to deliver ever more compelling smart-watch experiences."
Shese experiences include the ability to answer calls by touching your wrist, take photos with your phone remotely via the SmartWatch and control presentations remotely using Sony’s “Presentation Pal.”

The watch also includes basic features, such as displaying caller ID information, calendar entries, as well as Twitter and Facebook notifications.
The Sony SmartWatch 2 will be available worldwide this September.

Mere hours after the Moto X made it to stores, the iFixit guys have already torn it apart, revealing its innards to all. The guts of the American-assembled handset aren't entirely a surprise: under the hood we've got a motherboard, 16GB of eMMC NAND storage, the usual rear and front camera modules, inductive charging coils and a 3.8-volt 2200mAH lithium-ion battery. The disassemblers praised the replaceability of various modular components, as the tablet uses only one type of screw throughout. Its taped-in battery, display-fused digitizer and sticky adhesives took the Moto X down a few pegs, but its final score of 7 out of 10 still makes this one of the more easily repairable smartphones on iFixit's list.  Microsoft Corp. today announced that Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer has decided to retire as CEO within the next 12 months, upon the completion of a process to choose his successor. In the meantime, Ballmer will continue as CEO and will lead Microsoft through the next steps of its transformation to a devices and services company that empowers people for the activities they value most.
“There is never a perfect time for this type of transition, but now is the right time,” Ballmer said. “We have embarked on a new strategy with a new organization and we have an amazing Senior Leadership Team. My original thoughts on timing would have had my retirement happen in the middle of our company’s transformation to a devices and services company. We need a CEO who will be here longer term for this new direction.”
The Board of Directors has appointed a special committee to direct the process. This committee is chaired by John Thompson, the board’s lead independent director, and includes Chairman of the Board Bill Gates, Chairman of the Audit Committee Chuck Noski and Chairman of the Compensation Committee Steve Luczo. The special committee is working with Heidrick & Struggles International Inc., a leading executive recruiting firm, and will consider both external and internal candidates.
“The board is committed to the effective transformation of Microsoft to a successful devices and services company,” Thompson said. “As this work continues, we are focused on selecting a new CEO to work with the company’s senior leadership team to chart the company’s course and execute on it in a highly competitive industry.”
“As a member of the succession planning committee, I’ll work closely with the other members of the board to identify a great new CEO,” said Gates. “We’re fortunate to have Steve in his role until the new CEO assumes these duties.”
Founded in 1975, Microsoft (Nasdaq “MSFT”) is the worldwide leader in software, services and solutions that help people and businesses realize their full potential.

For years now, Microsoft watchers have wondered about the timing and other specifics of Steve Ballmer’s departure. Now we know them — or a lot more than we did yesterday, anyway. After 33 years at the company, the executive who started at Microsoft in 1980 and has been its CEO since 2000 has announced that he’ll retire within the next 12 months, once a successor has been named.
For folks interested primarily in the stock market, Ballmer’s time as Microsoft’s head honcho is defined by the fact that its shares have largely flat-lined during his tenure. Here, courtesy of Wolfram Alpha, is a chart comparing how MSFT has compared to AAPL during that time period:
WOLFRAM ALPHA
If you — like me — don’t care much about Microsoft’s stock price, Ballmer’s legacy is far more complicated. It can’t be summed up in a chart or a tweet or even in one blog post.
I am not among the man’s harshest critics, in part because I believe that all tech-company hegemonies are destined to decline, sooner or later. The dustbin of tech-company history is littered with outfits which were once market-defining behemoths: Lotus, WordPerfect, Netscape, Palm and oh, so many more. Microsoft in 2013 is not a company on the verge of joining them: It’s still making vast amounts of money and managing to be highly competitive in everything from mundane business software to blockbuster videogames.

The wildfire chewing up rugged land west of Yosemite National Park raged out of control Thursday, forcing hundreds of residents and visitors to clear out and authorities to cancel a popular bluegrass music festival planned for the Labor Day weekend.
As firefighters focused on protecting the small communities of Groveland and Pine Mountain Lake, officials gave a grim estimate of containment - 1 percent, down from 5 percent the day before. In all, the Rim Fire covered more than 98 square miles, making it one of the biggest blazes in the nation.
Facing dried-out hills, gusty canyon winds and nearly inaccessible terrain, a growing team of 1,800 firefighters struggled to make headway against the inferno, which began Saturday in a remote part of the Stanislaus National Forest near Groveland, a town of 600. The cause remains unknown.
About 2,500 structures remained threatened Thursday evening - nine structures have been destroyed so far - and the sky remained dark with smoke and ash. Some schools have been shut down for the week.
Highway 120, one of three main approaches to Yosemite from the west, was shut down near Groveland, and while the national park remains open and mostly smoke-free, officials said they were considering closing wilderness areas in the lower, western portion of park.
Gov. Jerry Brown issued a state of emergency in Tuolumne County on Thursday, a declaration that helps free up money and resources to fight the blaze. Brown acted after the fire's size rose sharply to 54,000 acres, up from an estimate of 16,000 acres the day before. The total late Thursday was 63,366.
"It's growing exponentially," said Jerry Snyder, a spokesman for the U.S. Forest Service.
The fire found a new victim as well: the five-day Strawberry Music Festival, a bluegrass get-together that is one of the area's biggest events. Thousands of people flock to Camp Mather, San Francisco's campground outside Yosemite, twice a year - on Memorial and Labor Day weekends. They camp out, sing along to acts, and play their own music.
But organizers wrote Thursday on their website that Tuolumne County officials had ruled the event could not begin as scheduled Aug. 29 because of "the potential adverse effects of the wildfire on public health, safety and welfare.

UPDATE: Kanye West reveals the first image of his daughter, North West.
Kanye West recently spoke about his appreciation for Kim Kardashian and their new child, North West, in an interview on Kris Jenner's talk show, "Kris." The rapper also spoke about criticism he's gotten regarding his relationship with Kardashian.
"I could have people saying, 'This is going to damage your credibility as an artist or a designer,'" West says of his relationship in an upcoming interview set to air on"Kris." "And I say, 'I don't care. I love this woman.' Or someone could say, 'When the paparazzi surround you, everyone knows you don't like the paparazzi. Why would you be with this person?' And I'm saying, 'I'm being with this person because I love this person and she's worth it to me."
West also speaks about how his grandfather's recent passing continues to influence his decision to remain committed to Kardashian.
"My grandfather just passed and his whole thing was never about money," West said. "It was never about popularity. His whole thing was joy, having joy in his life. [Kim] is my joy. She brought my new joy into the world. There's no paparazzi and there's no blog comment, there's nothing hat's going to take that joy from me."

Google is making a major push into voice search with the rollout of several new capabilities, the company announced on Wednesday. Specifically, over the coming days and weeks, English-speaking users with voice search on desktops, tablets and smartphones will be able to ask Google such common queries as, “is my flight on time?” or “let me see my reservations” and get answers instantly in Google Search if it’s in their Gmail, Google Calendar or Google+

First, a word about native Chrome functionality, which by default offers many of the features that are only available as plug-ins from FireFox or Internet Explorer. For example, lots of web developers want a version of the venerable on-the-fly web editor Firebug for Chrome. Funny story: There is a Firebug for Chrome extension -- Chrome Firebug Lite -- but you don't really need it because Firebug is in Chrome. Just highlight any page content, right click the selection, and choose Inspect Element. Chrome will open a Firebug-like editing window that lets you edit CSS and even Javascript code on the fly -- without an extension.
Similarly, there is an equivalent of Xmarks for Google Chrome -- Xmarks Bookmark Sync -- but anyone with a Google account can sync their bookmarks between any two Google Chrome installations. Just open the tools menu in Chrome (the little wrench icon in the top right), select Sync Bookmarks, and after you sign in with your Google user name Chrome will drag in all the bookmarks from your first Chrome installation to your current browser. Be warned, however, that these bookmarks are stored in Google Docs, so if you're a bookmark hoarder, your first post-Chrome Google Docs session may feature a laundry of list of web site titles filling up your Recent Documents list.
Now, onto the top 10 Google Chrome extensions you'll actually want and need:
1. AdBlock - Some claim that ad blocking is killing the free Web, others say that ad blockers are simply killing bad advertisers. Whatever your position, anyone looking for an equivalent ofGreasemonkey for Chrome should start with the AdBlock Chrome extension. It strips out most ads from the majority of websites, making for a cleaner, faster (and, thanks to blocked autoplaying video ads, quieter) browsing experience.
2. Send from Gmail - If you're a Google Chrome user, odds are you're a Gmail user, too. This Chrome extension will direct every e-mail link on a website to a Gmail window, rather than firing up MS Outlook. No more copy-and-pasting e-mail addresses into Gmail for you. As an added bonus, you can instantly email the URL to any page you're reading using this extension. This makes it so much easier to spam out that link for the latest LOLcats image or OK Go video.
3. Google Mail Checker - The only real disadvantage to Gmail compared with a desktop-based mail client is that, unless you have Gmail open, you don't get instant notification that new mail has been received. The Google Mail Checker Chrome extension keeps a running tally of your unread Gmail messages next to the Chrome address bar, and clicking the extension icon will open a Gmail tab. Never wonder whether you've got unread Gmail again.
4. IE Tab- Some sites are optimized to run exclusively in Internet Explorer, especially Microsoft products like Outlook Web Access. Don't give up that native IE Web functionality just because you're using Chrome. The IE Tab Chrome Extension creates a virtual IE browser within Chrome, so you get all the Internet Explorer-ness without running two different browsers.
5. Docs PDF/PowerPoint Viewer - If Chrome has one glaring weakness, it's that it doesn't always handle PDF links very well. (I've had to kill more than a few stalled Chrome tabs that unknowingly tried to open PDF online forms.) The Docs PDF/PowerPoint Viewer Chrome extension sends any PDF or PowerPoint Web link to Google Docs, where the document can be read, surfed, printed or saved quickly and easily.
6. FastestChrome - FireFox users will call this Chrome extension FastestFox for Chrome, which is appropriate, since the two plug-ins share the same creator. The FastestChrome extension enhances Web searches. Highlight any word on a page to get a definition of the term, or launch a search for the text. On Google search results, additional results pages are automatically loaded so you can just keep scrolling. Relevant results from other search engines and sites -- like Amazon and Wikipedia -- are interlinked into standard Google search results. On Wikipedia pages, related articles are automatically loaded into the left-hand column. If you perform any amount of web research on a regular basis, the FastestChrome extension gets very addictive, very fast.
7. Stop Autoplay for YouTube - There are a lot of Chrome extensions that stop videos from automatically playing when you visit their host pages, but the Stop Autoplay Chrome Extension goes the extra mile: It stops autoplay but still pre-buffers the video. For those of you with slow connections, no longer must you suffer through stuttering YouTube playback while you wait for the entire video to load. Simply wait for the progress bar to fill up, then hit play; your video will be waiting for you.
8. Feedly - If you have bookmarked RSS feeds from Google Reader, Twitter, Delicious, YouTube or Amazon, the Feedly Chrome extension is your new best friend. Feedly automatically imports your feeds, then arranges the content into a eye-pleasing magazine page. The Feedly extension also keeps a running tally of your unread items in the address bar, so you know exactly how many stories await in your new personal news site.
9. GooglePreview - The GooglePreview Chrome Extension is simple: It adds a thumbnail to the left of any Google search result showing a snapshot of the listed website. This is very helpful when you're looking for a site you visited but didn't bookmark, as the thumbnail image can help jog your memory. Also, if there are (ahem) unsavory images on the page, you'll know before you open the link.
10. Session Manager - Sometimes bookmarks aren't enough. Sometimes you need to save a web page exactly as it is, with your account logged in and certain online work already in progress. The Session Manager Chrome extension is there for you in these situations. Simply click the cardboard box icon next to the address bar, and Session Manager will offer a Save option for any web page you're running. All saved web pages are timestamped, so you can return to any version of your in-progress work at any time. Skip login screens and configuration menus and return to any page exactly as you left it. It sounds trivial, but for those of us that bounce between multiple web apps and interfaces, Session manager is a time-saver that makes a noticeable difference.
These Chrome extensions will get you started down the road to more efficient, effective Web browsing, but they're just the beginning. Bear in mind that each additional Chrome extension expands Chrome's memory footprint. Install too many and the browser will become unwieldy, but by mixing and matching from this starter set, Chrome will feel like your custom-made personal browser in no time.

team of researchers used a custom-built GPS device to send counterfeit signals to a 213-foot yacht, forcing the US$80 million vessel off its course without triggering any alarms.
The spoofed yacht was part of the experiment, so no harm was inflicted on the vehicle or its passengers. However, the test highlights the need for a broader understanding of navigational attacks, said University of Texas at Austin researchers.
The team conducted its experiment about 30 miles off the coast of Italy in June. Researchers boarded the yacht, and two students sat atop the upper deck posing as the attackers. Armed with a briefcase-sized GPS spoofing device, the students began to send faint civil GPS signals toward the ship's two GPS antennas. They slowly increased the signals until their counterfeit waves overtook the authentic GPS signals, gaining control of the yacht's navigational system

It's no secret that Windows 8 has met with only a lukewarm reception, but life in the tech world moves quickly, and now Windows 8.1 is on the way.
If you've installed Windows 8, it's worth downloading the recently released free preview version of Windows 8.1. By doing so, you will be able to take advantage of the updated OS's personalization and services improvements. The final build will be out later this year.
Curious Windows 7 users can also check out 8.1 by creating and installing an ISO file from the Microsoft website. I've written about ISO-creating concepts before.
Windows 8 users update to Windows 8.1 through the Windows Store. Here's how to go about it if you've already got Windows 8 installed.

Step 1:

Verify that you have a recovery partition on your hard drive. Access the Command Prompt from the Windows 8 Search charm by entering the term Command. Right click on the result and choose Run as Administrator from the options.
Confirm at the prompts, and then enter the term "recimg /showcurrent" at the Command Prompt to identify if there is a recovery image present.

Step 2:

Create a recovery image if, in the previous step, a "no active recovery image" error appears.
Create the image by creating a folder called Refreshimage at the Command Prompt and then entering "recimg -createimage c:\refreshimage" and Enter.
Tip: The create folder command is "mkdir c:\refresiimage" and then Enter.

Step 3:

Create a USB recovery drive. This will allow you to revert back to your previous install from external media if you need to.
Enter the term Recovery in the Search charm and touch or click Settings. Then choose Create a Recovery Drive and the tool will open.
Choose Copy the Recovery Partition from the PC to the Recovery Drive checkbox and choose Next. Then insert a USB drive, choose it from the options presented and touch or click Next followed by Create. Allow the file transfer to take place and then choose Finish. Then remove and store the flash drive.

Step 4:

Browse to the Windows 8.1 Preview Web page and choose the Get It Now button. Then follow the prompts to open the file and allow the install to take place.
Tip: Back up your personal data before updating any operating system. An update to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8 should retain Windows settings, personal files and most apps.

Step 5:

Restart the PC when prompted, and then open the Store by touching or clicking on the Store tile. Then choose the Update Windows tile or any Update Windows prompt.

Step 6:

Select Download and allow the download to proceed. Follow the prompts to restart and allow the setup to proceed. Follow the prompts to set up the account, including entering a security code that can be sent by email when prompted.

Step 7:

Explore the new features, which include navigation arrows where there was previously white space, and other navigation tools, like a Windows icon for flipping between classic desktop and Windows 8 Start page.
Tip: You'll need your Windows 8 product key when you update to the final edition of Windows 8.1 later this year.

Microsoft Research is trying to get 3D printing one step further, announcing a project that could embed coded tags into any resulting object.

Simply called InfraStructs, the developed prototype is supposed to eliminate the need for electronic chips or bar codes used to protect a specific product. Using specially created devices, manufacturers can automatically scan the printed object and read its coded tag, Microsoft explained.

“The benefit of such an approach is that manufacturers can embed unique information—serial numbers or even simple programs—in coded tags by designing them as part of the 3-D printed product,” the company added.

“This overcomes the need to insert radio-frequency ID (RFID) tags or electronic chips, which add to manufacturing cost and complexity, or using bar codes, which must be applied externally and are vulnerable to tampering.”

3D printing appears to play a much more important role for Microsoft, as the company has already announced that it is offering

In what amounts to a serious environmental breach or a continuation of China's anti-Apple PR blitz -- or both -- Chinese regulators are scrutinizing a pair of Apple suppliers in China over pollution allegations.
The factories in question, located in Kunshan, an electronics manufacturing hotbed about 40 miles west of Shanghai, are reportedly dumping large amounts of heavy metals into local rivers. The plants are owned by Taiwan-based Foxconn Technology Group and UniMicron Technology. Pollution or no, both plants are among Apple's 2013 suppliers.
Foxconn is best known for alleged worker rights abuses, which have been cited as reasons for riots and suicides at Foxconn factories.
Foxconn complies with environmental regulations, it said in a statement.
UniMicron conducts daily water inspections to prevent pollution, the company maintained.
This may be part of a so-called PR war (or "smear campaign," if you prefer) China launched against Apple in March, when the company was featured in a state-run television special documenting its substandard service in China.
The anti-Apple bent of Chinese media has continued despite an official apology from Apple CEO Tim Cook, and despite Apple's pledge to help victims of a recent earthquake. Indeed, the earthquake pledge has been used against Apple: There is no proof of any assistance to victims, The People's Daily has claimed.

It’s frequency startling that Samsung is operative on a mint smartphone — it is a device manufacturer, after all. What is startling is a form cause of this new device: It will reportedly be styled as a dual-display flip phone — similar, in other words, to a many other clamshell inclination that jam-packed a marketplace before smartphones took over.
